Nurture your summerhouse in the face of what nature might throw at it this winter2009-08-10 Scotts of Thrapston has an enviable reputation for manufacturing quality timber summerhouses and bespoke garden buildings. Along with a stunning range of their own, Scotts produces two desirable garden retreats in partnership with the National Trust. As with any timber product though, regular care and attention is of paramount importance to ensuring the long life and enjoyment of your summerhouse. So, as winter approaches, Scotts offers some simple tips to help keep your garden retreat in tip top shape: • Firstly, inspect for signs of dampness, mould, discoloration, cracking or any movement and address the problem accordingly. • Paint or stain your summerhouse, ideally every 3 – 4 years, depending on location and exposure to climatic conditions. It is recommended that the original brand of paint or stain is used for maintaining your building. If you own a Scotts summerhouse, details of the paint or stain manufacturer can be obtained from them directly. • Regularly clean the windows with a proprietary brand of window cleaner. • Oil hinges and door fittings, if and when necessary. • If you intend to enjoy your summerhouse all year round, consider lining and insulating it. The introduction of lighting and heating can enhance the ambience and ensure it is a desirable retreat, even in the depths of winter. • Cushions can be stored in your summerhouse, but if it is not in use for any length of time, Scotts recommends that the upholstery sets, including roof lining, are stored in a black airtight bag. • Develop a maintenance plan to record the dates you have carried out work and diarise dates to review the building again.
