Project Details

Scotts supplied and fixed some 300 trusses for the development of the new St. Mary’s wing at Luton and Dunstable Hospital.

The building is made up of two mirrored wings, each approximately 57m long, which are linked at one end by a single storey and at the other by a full height building. Here the plant room occupies the roof space and girder trusses were designed to negate the need for a masonry ring beam. A passage for emergency access from the plant room was constructed in one hip using flat trusses.

For the two wings, trusses forming a total span of 13.5m were supplied in two parts for ease of handling and were supported by a load bearing internal wall.

The project manager stated "The trussed rafters have worked well and we are pleased with the overall result. Scotts provided us with a good service - they also have the warranties on the design which was one of the key reasons for choosing them over another truss fabricator."
