The Summerhouses

Working in close partnership with the National Trust, Scotts of Thrapston has used its 85 years of joinery experience to design and create two highly individual garden buildings, each providing a peaceful retreat from the pressures of modern living and each inspired by a very special National Trust property.

The Writers Retreat ~ A National Trust Summerhouse inspired by George Bernard Shaw's writing hut.   The Reading Room ~ A National Trust Summerhouse inspired by Virginia Woolf's garden room.
The Writers Retreat   The Reading Room
This wonderful garden retreat draws inspiration from the modest summerhouse in George Bernard Shaw's garden. This tiny, converted shed was where he created many of his masterpieces, including the Oscar winning screenplay for "Pygmalion" and the play "St Joan", for which he was to win the Nobel Prize for literature.   The refurbished tool shed at the bottom of Virginia Woolf's garden forms the inspiration for the Reading Room. Despite living in privileged surroundings it was this distinctive outbuilding that was to provide her with the ideal place in which to write, think and relax.

It is these unassuming and humble buildings that are the motivation for Scotts' new garden retreats. Compared to the grand stately homes these wooden structures may be small and ordinary but they offer a unique opportunity to be at peace in a garden and enjoy a few moments of quiet contemplation.

The National Trust and Scotts of Thrapston have built a reputation on quality, traditional values, heritage and attention to detail. The Writer's Retreat and The Reading Room incorporate these values, offering classic garden buildings with a romantic charm.
