THE BOX SASH WINDOW – HOW IT WORKS
A Box Sash Window is made using a head, cill and two jambs to create a frame and the frame is divided into two ‘runs’ – the inner and the outer. The runs are separated by the ‘parting bead’ that is positioned centrally on the inside face of the frame and are stopped on the inside by the ‘staff bead’ and on the outside by the ‘external liner’.
On a box sash window, the ‘top sash’ slides up and down in the ‘outer run’ and the ‘bottom sash’ slides up and down in the ‘inner run’. The sashes are counterbalanced by ‘weights’ that are situated in the ‘boxes’ on each side of the window and are attached to the sashes by a pre-stretched nylon ‘cord’ that passes through a ‘pulley’ situated in the frame.
The resulting window allows either sash to be opened individually or simultaneously. Sashes can be locked shut by engaging the sash stops in the closed position or locked in an open position to allow some secure ventilation. For full security the sash stop should be engaged in the closed position and both sash catches securely engaged and locked using the key provided.
