New Build Range

new-build-timber-doors-scotts-of-thrapston-scaled.jpg

The Scotts new build range represents the highest performing External Timber Doors.

All new build projects have been required to be compliant with Part Q of Building Regulations.

Approved Document Q is designed to ensure the prevention of unauthorised access to dwellings. Any External Door that could be easily accessed, in an attempted break-in, must be capable of resisting physical attack by a ‘casual or opportunist’ individual.

Products from the Scotts new build range have all been tested and certified as Part Q 2016 compliant.  Every part of the product has been tested to achieve the PAS 24 certification, which verifies that a UKAS accredited certification body has monitored their performance to the required standard.

Refurbishment Range

The Scotts refurbishment range is the first choice for your replacement Doors project.

In renovation projects, the emphasis is much more on the subtleties of aesthetic appearance. With this in mind, the refurbishment range offers replacement Doors that fit in with existing properties, maintaining the traditional look required.

This range has been designed to ensure that timber section sizes are kept to an absolute minimum. Scotts works with you to ensure your replacement Doors do not detract from the building’s original appearance while you enjoy the benefits of your high performing, double glazed and fully weather-sealed Doors.

The design of the refurbishment range products is perfect for the renovation and refurbishment of existing properties and their extensions. Scotts of Thrapston offers high quality replacement Doors designed to suit your next project.

Pick the right Timber Doors

Scotts Timber Doors are ideal for both new build or refurbishment projects and are created to meet your exact specification. Below are a few options of Doors available from Scotts.

Front Entrance Doors are the main entrance to the house on the front of the property.  They are usually larger and grander and often a different colour to other Doors and Windows in the house to create a statement.

Front Doors will almost always open inwardly.  They are also fitted with a high security multipoint locking system but operate differently from the Scotts Single Doors or French Doors.

When the Front Entrance Door is pushed or pulled shut it will be held shut by the latch only (multipoint locking not engaged).  Access will be only available from outside with a key to operate the latch and internally the latch can simply be operated by a thumb turn to open the Door.

For full secure locking from either side; the key is to be used externally or the thumb turn internally (270 degree turning) and this will engage the full multipoint locking mechanism.  This lock has the added feature of a ‘day latch’; when activated the ‘day latch’ allows the Front Entrance Door to be pushed open and shut from either side without engaging the latch , for example if you are in and out with shopping etc.

French Doors and Single External Doors are generally found on the rear or side of a property or even a garage. They usually open outwardly but can also open in if required.

Door leaves are hung on the frame jambs with lift off butt hinges for easy handling on site and installation. A friction head stay will allow the Door leaves to open just past 90 degrees and can be adjusted to prevent them swinging loosely. Friction head stays can be removed retrospectively by you to utilise the full opening potential of the Door but is done so at your risk.

For a French Door, both Door leaves are fitted with a multipoint espagnolette locking system. The Door can be passed through in both directions by using the lever handle if not locked – and will simply open and shut on a latch that is operated by pressing down on the lever handle.

To lock the Doors the espagnolette is engaged by lifting the lever handle and then using the key to lock it internally or externally. The primary (master) or first opening leaf will be fitted with an additional deadbolt too which is operated by the key when locking the Door.

The locking cylinders for each doorset will be supplied with three keys as standard from Scotts. Keys can also be suited so that all locking cylinders are operable by the same key. Alternatively, cylinders can be supplied with thumb-turns on the inside so a key will never be needed to lock or unlock a Door from the inside.

Bi-Fold Doors are supplied in a variety of different opening combinations to suit your requirements. They are generally found to the rear of the property opening out onto a garden or terrace from kitchens, dining or living areas of the house.

Scotts Bi-Fold Doors are top hung and open out. Most combinations are able to provide a ‘pass’ or ‘traffic’ Door that enables just one of the sections to open and shut independently of the others when it is not practical or required to open up the entire bank of Door leaves. This will be operated by a lever handle which will operate a latch and an espagnolette locking system like our Single and French Doors.

The multiple leaves in a Bi-Fold Door are fitted into a top hung track system and held shut by a series of shoot bolts that secure the leaves in the closed position into the outer frame. When the shoot bolts are released, the Door leaves are then free to slide and fold back on themselves to one (or sometimes both) sides in a concertina motion. This enables large openings to be fully opened up – which no other Door type can achieve.

Specification

Scotts Timber Doors are built bespoke to your needs and each detail has been carefully specified.

Timber

Engineered/Solid Hardwood is a versatile, high performing and sustainably-sourced uniform engineered hardwood from reputable suppliers.

This engineered timber offers dimensional stability, superior strength, high performance and an environmentally friendly substrate to work with. This enables the production of Doors that will perform well, look great and require minimal maintenance, for decades to come.

The engineered timber used by Scotts has been produced in the country of origin where a computerised high-tech process scans the solid sections for defects so that they can be removed. The remaining quality elements are then finger jointed and glued together to produce the certified engineered knot free (clear graded) substrate in 6-metre lengths.

This high quality, engineered hardwood is durable in its own right which negates the need for environmentally unfriendly treatment processes to provide product longevity.

Engineered sections are 60% stronger than solid sections and the benefits it provides in strength, stability, performance, appearance and its ability to accept a paint finish are significant.

Coating System

Products from the Scotts new build and refurbishment ranges of External Timber Doors are delivered to site fully finished, with market leading warranties. They are supplied with three coats of a spray applied, water based, microporous finishing system as standard.

The coating system application and all finishing is carried out in Scotts purpose-built manufacturing plant in Thrapston by highly skilled operatives.

Prior to a finish being applied to the frames, all surfaces are initially prepared by a mechanical sanding process using increasingly finer grades of abrasive paper up to 180 grit and subsequently by hand to ensure attention to finer detail.

The engineered hardwood used for Scotts products has a moisture content between 12 – 18%. Once the Doors have been installed on site, they are subject to the climate and humidity changes of the UK’s ever-changing weather.

When the air outside is very humid the timber will want to absorb moisture from the air. Conversely, when it is very dry the timber will let go of any moisture contained within the timber. A microporous paint system allows the timber to ‘breathe’ and the moisture content of the timber substrate to fluctuate by taking on and discharging water vapour from the atmosphere without any detrimental effect to the coating. Closed ‘non breathable’ paint systems do not allow this movement of vapour resulting in blistering, cracking and increased maintenance.

All of Scotts products can be specified in the customers colour of choice from either the RAL Classic Range or colour matched from more bespoke palettes.

Glazing

Scotts adopts a dry, drained and vented glazing system in accordance with the glass and glazing federation requirements and this enables double glass unit suppliers to offer a 10-year warranty on the glass units that are fitted into Scotts products.

Glazing clips are used to hold the glass in place in the rebate. This dual-purpose clip that locates into a groove in the frame rebate ensures regulatory compliant security and also acts as a carrier for the internal beading which means you’ll never see pinholes in the bead.

Scotts products are internally glazed using a glazing tape and each piece of glass is perfectly cleaned prior to glazing to ensure optimum adhesion of the tapes.

Scotts adopts an ‘applied bar’ system when it comes to glazing bars on the new build range of External Doors. The double glass unit is then glazed in the factory from the inside with a matching integral spacer bar configuration inside the cavity of the unit.

Finally, the internal ovolo or lambs tongue profiled glazing bar is then produced as a one-piece internal grille (that ensures all scribed joint are perfectly formed) that is located onto the glazing clip and pushed securely into place.

Integral and perimeter spacer bars within the cavity of the glass units are available in white (standard) and black (option).  The unit depths for the high-performance glass units we use for the New Build Range is 24.8mm (4mm tough: 14mm Argon: 6.8mm laminate) or 24mm (4mm tough: 16mm Argon: 4mm tough).

Glazing Bar Options

The Scotts ranges of traditionally styled Timber Doors are available with a choice of authentic moulded profiles on the frames, sashes and glazing bars so that you can personalise Doors or emulate a period style or feature of existing fenestration.

Externally all framing and glazing bars have a simple chamfered detail. This not only replicates a traditional putty glazed appearance but also offers a good technical detail in line with good joinery practice to enable swift water run-off. Scotts external glazing bars come in two sizes 18mm and 21mm wide.

The New Build Range is glazed with 24mm or 24.8mm double glass units.
