planning your new stable yard

When designing and developing your timber stables, there is so much to consider. Attention to detail is of paramount importance when planning your new stable yard.

A common mistake is not seeking the correct advice and spending enough time at the planning stage when undertaking a new stabling project, leading to wasting money and not developing the best stable yard fit for purpose. Scotts, however, will be on hand at every stage to ensure you get the exact equestrian buildings that you and your horse(s) want.

Considering your stabling options

Listed below are some initial considerations that we think will help you when planning your new stables:
What type of horse(s) are you designing your stables for?
How many stables / loose boxes do you require?
Where do you want to locate your stables?
How much land can you allocate to the development of your new stable yard?
What is the ideal stable layout to suit your working practices?
What is the prevailing wind direction?
What considerations need to be made to ensure the stables are in keeping with surrounding architecture or for planning permission?
What budget do you have for the stables (excluding the concrete base)?
What timescales are you working to for your new stable yard?

Once you have considered these aspects, Scotts will work with you to plan the ideal layout for your specific stabling needs. Careful planning and design at the earliest stage will ensure that your stables will be a practical, functional and attractive investment.

When you decide to build new timber stables, it is reassuring to know that Scotts will be on hand at every stage throughout the process to ensure you and the horses get exactly what is needed. Scotts recognises that stables are a major investment and want to make the process as simple and stress free as possible. When you choose to buy your new timber stables, American barn or equestrian buildings from Scotts of Thrapston, they will assist with the following:

Planning Permission for your timber stables

Planning permission is invariably required for most stable yards, however small or large, and advice on presenting your application and handling the bureaucracy is part of the Scotts service. For further details on how Scotts can assist with your planning application, please view our Planning Permission web page.

Design of your new timber stable yard
After an initial consultation, Scotts will assist you in careful positioning of loose boxes, tack rooms, feed rooms, haystores and all equestrian buildings, along with siting of access paths and the overall orientation of the stables. Careful and sympathetic design will ensure the timber stables blend in with existing buildings and surroundings, thus adding value to your property.

Personalisation of your stables is also easily attainable by working with Scotts. Clock towers, clocks and weather vanes all add interest to the timber stables and architectural features such as aged oak posts or hipped roofs can complete a stable yard design which is uniquely yours.

Manufacture of your stable block

The stables, equestrian buildings or American barn, and all of their ancillary structural components, are manufactured in Scotts’ purpose-built factory in Thrapston. Skilled craftsmen use high-quality materials at every stage of manufacture, providing you with timber stables that last for decades, with the minimum of maintenance.

Construction of Scotts timber stables

Scotts loose boxes are manufactured in sections, from vacuum pressure impregnated European Redwood, which are bolted together and can be dismantled and re-erected if necessary. Scotts own dedicated installation team is responsible for the final construction of your timber stables. At an agreed date and time, the stables will be delivered and they will be built onto the prepared base. Scotts is happy to co-ordinate with specialist contractors, e.g. plumbers and electricians, so that the whole site is ready for the horses to move in, upon completion.

In October 1992 you supplied and erected a range of Newmarket stables for me, comprising 3 loose boxes 1 feed room 1 tack room and a hay shed roofed in green felt. They have been fantastic stables and are still in daily use, however the roof now needs attention and I was wondering if you did a refurbishing service. I would be so pleased if you did as the quality of your work was second to none.
