A haven for your home crafted with care from high quality materials

The appearance and style of a Scotts summer house is only half the story. You can rest assured that your summer house has been built using the finest materials from the watertight roof to the precisely fitting doors and windows, and the sound, solid floor. Our summer houses combine expert craftsmanship with creativity.

Whether you choose a glass fibre or cedar shingle roof material, you can expect it to last up to 30 years with minimal maintenance. Choose from slate or lead effect moulded composite glass fibre that is highly resistant to UV rays, or a natural cedar shingle made from stress graded timber that will stand the test of time. Tasteful roof underlining is provided in either cream fabric or off-white paint. The external cladding, wall framing, doors and windows are precision-made from sustainably sourced hardwood Red Grandis, and the floor is custom-made from European Redwood. Door and windows are handmade by expert joiners and can be fitted with double-glazing using low E energy glass and finished with solid brass or contemporary satin chrome furniture.

Step-by-Step

We understand that choosing exactly the right elements for your made-to-measure summer house requires thought and deliberation. While we are happy to talk you through the process, we hope that this guide will help you to weigh up the benefits of selecting from our extensive range of construction options. Follow the steps below and your vision will emerge from the choices you make:

  • Firstly, choose the size and shape of summer house that best fits with your property and the way you envisage enjoying this deluxe extension to your home.
  • Secondly, decide whether you prefer a lead or slate effect glass fibre roof or a natural cedar shingle. You can expect both roofing options to last 20-30 years. (If you need to limit the roof height to below 2.5m, let us know when you place your order).
  • Next, choose from eleven classic exterior paint colours that complement your garden setting and personal style.
  • Then decide whether you would like single or double-glazing, and classic brass or more modern satin chrome door and window furniture.
  • Think about whether you would like to add tongue and groove effect lining or insulation to the interior walls.
  • If you choose to add free-standing modular seating, select a fabric design to help create the ambience and style that you prefer.
  • Finally, browse our full selection of optional extras and choose whether to add a rotating base, shelf feature, or solar lighting.

Your choice of roof materials

The roof becomes the crowning glory for your summer house, so it is important to choose the materials that complement your style ambitions. It is also vital that the roof protects you from the weather, and whichever roof option you choose, minimal maintenance should see it last for between 20 and 30 years.

Moulded from composite glass fibre, you can select from a realistic lead or slate effect roof styled to fit as standard on many of our summer house models. Designed to realistically simulate slate tiles or lead, this material provides the ultimate protection from UV rays. A glass fibre roof is supplied as standard on the Balmoral, Baltimore, Newhaven (2.2m model), Burghley (2.4m) and the Sun Ray Garden Room (3.4m model). A moulded composite roof like this can provide a clean, modern aesthetic, or the opportunity to allow moss and plants to grow, providing naturalistic appeal.

Alternatively, you might prefer an all-natural cedar shingle roof, treated to deliver maximum preservation. Our summer house roofs are fitted with only the highest quality Grade 1 Western Red cedar shingles emanating warm tones that complement the natural verdure of your garden. Cedar roof options are all decorated with a stunning copper finial (except on the Sun Ray Garden Room). A cedar shingle roof is supplied as standard on our Burghley Summer house (3.0m and 3.6m models), the Newhaven Corner Summer house (3.0m model) and the Sun Ray Garden Room (3.9m and 4.4m models).

If required, we can fulfil your brief to install a cedar shingle roof that will keep the height of the building below 2.5m to comply with current planning regulations. Our smaller Burghley summer house (2.4m model) and Sun Ray Garden Room (3.4m) can be supplied with a reduced pitch roof for this purpose. Alternatively, the 2.2m Newhaven Corner Summer house is available with a modified slate effect glass fibre roof that maintains the height of the structure below 2.5m.

Underpinning each roof is a handmade structure crafted from stress graded timber and lined with a breathable underlay to ensure a watertight finish. Roof lining is supplied in a plain cream fabric as standard, or with an underlining made from MDF and painted in off white if you select a cedar shingle roof.

Summer house Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a summer house?

A summer house is an outdoor structure designed to enhance your garden space. Typically designed in timber, a summer house is flexible to provide a cool, shaded place to retreat from the summer heat, or a cosy hideaway for chilly spring and autumn days. Ideal for use as a craft room, yoga studio or gym, or even as outdoor bar, a summer house provides a unique and beautiful space for an idyllic garden upgrade. You can also add supplementary security and aesthetic features. Choose a slate or lead effect moulded composite or cedar shingle roof, additional windows, or glazed doors to create a light-filled space.

Scotts’ wooden summer houses are designed in a range of shapes and sizes. Small and traditional, our Balmoral summer house offers the perfect fit for a garden of any dimensions. Or you might want to make a splash with a sophisticated Newhaven corner summer house.

Whatever the season, our luxury summer houses can be enjoyed comfortably all year round enabling you to spend more time relaxing in your own, personal garden paradise. All Scotts summer houses are built with craftsmanship using sustainably sourced hardwood which means they are exceptionally durable and hardwearing. You can view our range of summer house designs, colours, shapes, and sizes here.

  • What can I use a summer house for?

In recent years, the way we enjoy summer houses has continuously evolved. A wooden summer house effectively represents an extension to your home and can be used for whatever you desire. Depending on the size and location of your summer house, it could be a wonderful place for indulging in your favourite hobbies such as painting, crafting, or keeping fit in your own home gym. It could become an ideal entertaining space or a place to work quietly undisturbed. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination.

We offer free-standing seating consisting of self-contained storage boxes upholstered in beautiful fabrics. Alternatively, you can simply arrange your own furniture to create a summer house that perfectly meets your needs.

  • Do I need planning permission for my wooden summer house?

Wooden summer houses and garden buildings are regarded as ‘permitted development’ so they do not usually require planning permission, although some criteria apply. While we cannot provide definitive advice on whether planning permission is required in each individual circumstance, we hope that these guidelines* will assist you.

*The guidelines are intended to give an overview of regulations which may be subject to changes in legislation. We recommend that you contact your local planning authority for specific advice.

  • Do I need a base for my summer house?

Wooden summer houses and garden buildings all require a firm base constructed on a level surface to promote their stability and longevity. You will need to obtain the base plan for your choice of summer house from Scotts before it is constructed to ensure that the size and dimensions are appropriate.

Alternatively, Scotts offer an innovative and convenient ground screw base that will provide the perfect support for your summer house on an uneven surface. Find out more about our ground screw base here.

  • Where is the ideal location to place my wooden summer house?

A wooden summer house can be installed anywhere in your garden. Below we look at some of the factors you should consider before making your decision. Think about whether you would like your summer house to be:

    • Located to face the direction of the sun or placed in the shade
    • Situated in the middle of your garden or in a space-saving corner
All Scotts’ standard summer houses are over 2.5m in height so they must be installed at least 2m from your boundary to comply with planning regulations. Full details are available here
    • Facing the garden or your home
The Scotts rotating base can be selected as an optional extra to allow you more flexibility. Turn your summer house to face the sun or change your vista as required. The rotating based can be fitted to the Balmoral, Baltimore or 2.4m Burghley summer house models.
    • Fitted with a convenient power supply.
  • What type of timber is used for Scotts summer houses?

The external cladding, wall framing, roof, doors, and windows are manufactured from stable, durable, and dense Red Grandis, a premium quality, sustainably sourced hardwood timber derived from well-managed forests. The floor is manufactured from high quality PEFC® certified European Redwood which is vacuum pressure impregnated with Osmose Naturewood. All timber is carefully selected to deliver a maximum lifespan.
